Miss Wilkins said the dead soldiers were in Heaven with Jesus, though Daisy wasn’t sure about that. But if it was true, Dad might somehow be sending her a message. Perhaps he was telling her that he would be at Westminster Abbey on Armistice Day, and that he wanted her and Mum and William and Albert to be there too …

So Daisy decided she’d have one last try at talking to Mum about it. She knew she’d have to pick the right moment and think carefully about what she said.

But the next morning, Miss Wilkins told the class all the tickets had gone.

“There just weren’t enough tickets,” said Miss Wilkins. “Thousands of people applied, and most didn’t get one.”

“Did you get a ticket, Miss?” Daisy asked. “You really deserve to be there.”

“Sadly, no, Daisy, I didn’t,” Miss Wilkins said softly. Her eyes were red, and Daisy had a feeling she’d been doing a lot of crying. “But I will be there in my heart.”
